Cleaning tools: blower, swab, liquid, static brushes

Before touching the sensor glass with anything, try blasting it with air. Don’t blow into the camera. The safest method involves a hand-squeezed blower bulb. It’s hard to get enough force with small bulbs, so look for one that fills your whole hand. Move the nozzle of the blower into the camera, taking care to avoid touching the glass with the nozzle. Squeeze vigorously a few times. After a visual inspection replace the lens.

To check for dust after cleaning, shoot a frame of blue sky or any other uniformly bright or midtoned subject. Turn off the autofocus and throw the lens out of focus manually. Bring the image up on the LCD and magnify it as much as possible. Scan the image for dust. If any dust remains on the sensor, it will be easy to see.
